Therapeutic Plasma Exchange

Therapeutic procedure in which the patient's blood passes through a medical device that separates plasma from other blood components. The plasma is removed and replaced with a replacement solution. It has a dual therapeutic effect: (1) removing pathogenic or toxic substances from circulation, and in certain diseases, (2) providing missing components that are normally present in plasma.
