Irradiation
DEFINITION
Treatment of some blood components with gamma radiation, with the aim of impeding the proliferation of the donor's lymphocytes in the receiver.
HOW IT IS OBTAINED
With a caesium 137 irradiator, the dose is equal to or above 25 Gy (2,500 rads).
EXPIRY
In the case of red blood cells and total blood, preservation is 14 days less.
