Who can register as a bone marrow donor?
Any person up to 40 years old who is in good health.
Only 1 out of every 3,000 people registered in the Bone Marrow Donor Registry will end up being a match for a patient.
What is a bone marrow donation?
The donor's stem cells can be obtained in two ways:
- By collecting the donor's stem cells from your bloodstream through a cell separator. You will need to have a daily injection for four days.
- By extracting bone marrow from the hip bones through punctures. In this case, anesthesia is required, and you will need to stay in the hospital until mid-afternoon. This method is only used in 10% of cases.
