Clinical information

Diagnostic Utility:

This is the qualitative detection of IgG antibodies against the hepatitis C virus (HCV) and its determination is useful in:

• Identification of individuals with chronic infection or past infection by the hepatitis C virus.
• Blood component transfusion.
• Transplantation of stem cells, solid organs, and tissues.
• Screening of infectious diseases in egg and semen donors.

Method:

Chemiluminescent immunoassay (ChLIA).

Reference Values

Possible results are: Reactive and Non-reactive.

Diagnostic Algorithm:

In the case of a reactive anti-HCV IgG result, the confirmatory test for HCV antibodies is performed by Immunoblot:

Response Time:

Maximum of 2 working days

Specimen information

Sample: Serum and/or plasma
Tube: Aliquots of 1-5 mL, plasma tubes with EDTA, potassium oxalate, sodium citrate, ACD, CP2D, CPD, or CPDA-1 as anticoagulant and/or serum tubes with and without gel separator.
Minimum essential volume: 1 ml
Stability:

• At room temperature: ≤ 4 days
• In refrigeration 2-8 ºC: ≤ 14 days
• Sample frozen at or below -20ºC: 10 years

Transport instructions: Preferably at room temperature and/or refrigerated if they are whole blood tubes and frozen if they are serum and/or plasma aliquots.

Reason for rejection: Highly hemolyzed sample.
