Cytomegalovirus, IgG Antibodies. Screening

Clinical information

Diagnostic Utility:

This is the qualitative detection of IgG antibodies against cytomegalovirus (CMV) and its determination is useful in:

• Identification of seronegative individuals, as well as seronegative donors of organs, blood products, semen, or ova.
• Transfusion of blood products in newborns, pregnant women, patients with liver disease, and immunosuppressed patients.
• Transplantation of progenitor cells, umbilical cord blood, solid organs.

Method:

Chemiluminescence microparticle immunoassay (CMIA).

Reference Values

Possible results are: Reactive and Non-Reactive.

Diagnostic Algorithm:

In the case of a reactive result for CMV anti-IgG and/or CMV anti-IgM, the CMV DNA detection test can be requested upon request:

* Only performed upon request and requires a whole blood sample.

Response Time:

Maximum of 2 working days.

Specimen information

Sample: Serum and/or plasma
Tube: Aliquots of 1-5 mL, plasma tubes with EDTA, sodium citrate, heparin, ACD, CPDA-1, or CPD as anticoagulant and/or serum tubes with or without gel separator.
Minimum essential volume: 1 ml
Stability:

• At room temperature: ≤ 3 days
• In refrigeration at 2-8 ºC: ≤ 14 days
• Frozen sample equal to or less than -20ºC: 10 years

Transport instructions: Preferably at room temperature if they are whole blood tubes and refrigerated if they are serum and/or plasma aliquots.

Reason for rejection: Highly hemolyzed sample.
