Clinical information

Diagnostic Utility:

The HLA-B27 allelic family is part of the HLA class I locus B, comprising 26 alleles grouped under the same serological specificity. Regarding its average population frequency, in the Caucasian population it can be said to vary between 3% and 8%. Despite its low frequency, the interest in this allelic family lies in the strong association it maintains with a group of rheumatic diseases, the spondyloarthropathies among which Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) can be highlighted as the most strongly associated and important disease. Approximately 90% of patients with this type of disease are B*27 positive.

Method:

Genotyping of the HLA-B27 antigen by real-time PCR with FRET hybridization probes.

Reference Values

The possible results are: B*27 positive or B*27 negative.
